Wedding invitation design: formats, typefaces & papers

Wedding invitation suite

Your wedding invitation is the event’s first impression: it sets style, logistics and expectations. Great design balances aesthetics with clarity—so choose format, typefaces and papers with your venue, palette and protocol in mind. Here’s a practical guide to building a coherent, functional suite.

Format: print, digital or hybrid

Print is timeless and photographs beautifully: usually a main card, RSVP/map insert and an envelope. Digital eases sending and updates: you can create a landing with RSVP and a QR that collects responses in real time. A hybrid setup blends both: printed invites for close family and digital for everyone else, with unified aesthetics.

Typefaces & hierarchy

Use a legible serif or sans for info and a script for accents (names or initials). Define a clear hierarchy: names > date > venue > times. Mind line spacing and contrast; on dark stocks, light inks or foil work better.

Palette, papers & finishes

Let your palette echo the décor. For papers, choose cotton, recycled or pearlescent in 300–600 gsm depending on the finish. Processes elevate the piece: letterpress (deboss), foil, spot varnish, die-cut or painted edges. Produce +10–15% extra for last-minute changes.

Envelopes & extras

A well-resolved envelope changes everything: interior liner, wax seal, belly band and calligraphy in the same palette. Include a map/itinerary, dress code card and a piece of matching day-of signage for the event.

Wording & protocol

  • Tone: classic (hosts) or modern (couple invites).
  • Key details: actual time, arrival window, access/parking, transport.
  • Policy: kids yes/no; dress code with a brief color/etiquette note.
  • Languages: if guests come from abroad, consider a bilingual ES/EN version.

RSVP & timing

  • Save the date: 6–9 months before (destination) / 4–6 local.
  • Invitation: 8–10 weeks before; RSVP 3–4 weeks out.
  • Follow-up: automate reminders from the QR landing.

Proofs & mailing

Request a digital proof and, for specialty finishes, a physical sample. Double-check spelling, accents and table numbering if the printer includes them. Pack by household and label envelopes. For shipping, use flat boxes and corner protection.
