How to choose the perfect wedding DJ

Music frames emotion and memories. A great wedding DJ isn’t just someone who “plays songs”—they’re a specialist in reading crowds, managing energy and syncing key moments with your planner. We invited Saúl, our go-to DJ, to distill the essentials when hiring.

Note: A wedding DJ differs from a club DJ: beyond technique and selection, they master protocol, timing and mics/MC duties.

1) Pre-interview: chemistry & method

  • Share your story, tastes, guest ages and what you don’t want to hear. Chemistry matters.
  • Ask about their methodology: how they build blocks, open and close the floor.
  • Review portfolio (live videos), reviews and experience with multicultural weddings.

2) Music short-list and do-not-play

Hand over a short list of must-plays (15–30) and a do-not-play. No need to micromanage—a good DJ will connect your taste to the room’s pulse. Include preferred versions (original, clean remix, acoustic) and special cuts for first dance/bouquet.

3) Dance-floor psychology & progression

The gap between “good” and “epic” lies in the night’s evolution. Social start with a mid-groove, controlled lift to open the floor, peaks and breathers to bring all ages along. A top DJ is chameleonic: adapting BPMs, decades and languages to real-time response—not a fixed list.

4) Tech & gear

  • Sound matched to headcount and venue (power, distribution, monitors).
  • Tidy booth, reliable mics, backups (laptop/USB), conditioners/UPS.
  • Functional lighting (ambience/floor) and sync with key moments: entrance, first dance, bouquet, cake.

5) Logistics with planner & venue

  • Send a technical rider (power, space, table, cover if outdoors).
  • Early soundcheck and mic test.
  • Respect venue rules (dB limits, cold sparks, confetti, haze).

6) Clear contract

  • Dates/times, setup/teardown and overtime.
  • Cancellation policy, force majeure and equivalent replacement (if the DJ falls ill).
  • Scope: DJ, audio, lighting, MC, screens; who operates what.

Final checklist

  • Interview with chemistry + verified portfolio.
  • Short “must-play” list + do-not-play.
  • Technical rider approved by the venue.
  • Signed contract and scheduled payments.
  • Backup plan (gear and repertoire).
